I find the increase of diagnosis for ADHD troubling. Every option should be explored before medicating for the condition. For example: Is your child getting enough sleep? The symptoms of ADHD are virtually identical to the symptoms of chronic sleep deprivation! Is your child sensitive to certain foods or drinks? Is he not getting enough exercise? Is his attentiveness abnormal, or is he just annoying his parents and teachers due to poor discipline?
Have you, as a parent, done your due diligence to make sure that your child's behavior does not have some other cause?
As an adult with ADHD, I'm tired of having my problems disparaged due to other peoples' lazy parenting and hasty diagnoses from overworked doctors.
Yes, ADHD really does exist. We don't always know the cause - in my case, it appears to be genetic from my father's side. In other cases, it might be brought on by diet or exposure to pesticides. In any case, when it's real, it is dangerous as well as frustrating, and a roadblock in the way of a good education and a successful career.
